Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) diagnosis and management recommendations are out from working groups of the European Society of Cardiology. While the society released guidance on pulmonary embolism in 2014, the new consensus document in the European Heart Journal is the first comprehensive advice on the rest of venous thromboembolism. "We propose direct oral anticoagulants as first line treatment for non-cancer patients. We also recommend catheter-directed thrombolysis as an adjuvant treatment only in select patients," lead author Lucia Mazzolai, MD, PhD, of Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland, noted in a press release. For management in the extended phase beyond the first 3 to 6 months, the recommendation was to personalize decisions for continuation of anticoagulation based on the risk-benefit ratio and to do a venous ultrasound at discontinuation as a baseline comparative exam in case DVT recurs.
